Utility scale projects are usually ground-mounted and start from 5 MWp upwards. The utility scale projects off-taker is usually the Government, e.g. SolarShams co-developed utility scale projects sized at 50 MWp each in Benban, Aswan under the FIT round II program. Such projects are heavily regulated, governed by a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and financed by international development banks. The aim of such projects is to contribute to national targets. Grid integration is usually at the MV or HV networks depending on the size of the project.
- Private IPP is gaining momentum in the Egyptian market, and surely constitutes one of the growth opportunities in solar energy in Egypt. A developer and EPC contractor like SolarShams would invest and build in a solar PV power plant to generate and sell the electricity from the plant to designated clients at an agreed upon tariff and conditions under a signed PPA between the parties. Both the off-takers (private) and the IPP are free to agree on the clean energy tariff. There might be an agreement between the developer and the TSO or DISCo for wheeling and balancing charges, depending on the project.
